Turkmen carpets, the model of beauty and harmony, the personification of the nation’s sole, its unique talent and the ancient history are recognized all over the world.

                                                 
                                                                               

Archeological researches have proved that Turkmenistan is one of the most ancient centers of the civilization. Turkmen carpets in millennia, evolving, came to the present time.
Research the ceramics samples of geoksyurskiy type of IV-III millennia B.C. in Southern Turkmenistan (in area of ancient delta of the river Tedzhen, on Altyn-depe at Meana, Ulug-depe at Dushak) has allowed to make a conclusion, that many ornamental motives of this ancient ceramics such as crosses, stepped pyramids, zigzags are completely identical to the patterns of the Turkmen carpets.The prints of reed mats are founded on the ancient settlements.
On the mat from Altyn – depe even the colors of the woven threads – grey and dark blue are kept. The finds of plummets for weaving loom evidence that the weaving and carpet making were developed in Turkmenistan in IV-III millenniums B.C Woven and plaited products more than six thousands years , developed already in antiquities smart ornamental style, have played the role in development of the same ancient painted ceramics which with its stepped motives is so similar with salor carpet gels. The modern carpets-makers widely use the similar iron knife - keser for cutting the pile thread of the carpet. In last centuries of II millennium B.C. the carpet –makers had the proved form of the tool - a carpet knife.
The written information directly about Turkmen carpets is belonged to XIII century. The famous Italian traveler Marko Polo (XIII century), visited Asia Minor, enthusiastically wrote about carpets of the local Turkmen, as about “the most thin and beautiful all over the world”.
The carpet art has been brought by Turkmen to the Middle East, whence, according to Ibn Sayid, Turkmen have sent the beautiful carpets to the different countries. The carpets which have been found out in Forstate (Egypt) by K.Dzh. Lamm are also the magnificent samples of Turkmen - osman art of XIV-XV centuries, at that their patterns are similar with Chovdur "gel". Now they are exposed in the National museum of Stockholm, and in museums of Cairo and Athens.
Patterns of Turkmen carpets can be found out on the Persian miniatures of Timurids’ epoch. They in the Persia which was famous for its carpets were considered as the best.

                                                                                  

 In the Museum of Turkmen carpet the collection comprises the most valuable reliquial of the carpet art. In 2001 in honor of the 10 th anniversary of Turkmenistan independence 40 carpet weavers during 8 months have woven unique carpet – giant “Beyik Saparmurat Turkmenbashyn Altyn Asyry” (the Golden Age of the Great Saparmurat Turkmenbashy” at Bakharly city. This unique Akhal-tecke carpet with area of 301 square meters (height 14 meters, width 21,5 meters) weight 1200 kg. has entered into the book of the World Records of Guiness as the biggest hand-made carpet in the world.

                                         

 Today a high manufacture traditions of the national weaving are maintained with great care and developed at the artistic carpet weaving enterprises of the State joint-stock corporation “Turkmenhaly”. The corporation includes 20 enterprises and organizations with more than 100 divisions all over the country. Their common target is to preserve traditions, maintain the worthy image of the Turkmen carpet, its export potential. The enterprises try to stick to the classical technologies in the whole chain of carpet production. Wool hand-made carpet items are manufactured in line with group principals, for example: Akhal-tecke, tecke, pendi, yomud, chovdur, beshir ( kizyl –ayak, kerki). Carpet thickness per a square meter fluctuates from 240 up to 500 thousand knots. Amazing skills of Turkmen carpet weavers are world wide recognized. Different high awards testify the modern Turkmen carpets’ best quality and refinement, commensurable with the unique carpet masterpieces of the past.

Many carpet weaving enterprises start to produce carpet items from a pure silk, which are of high quality. They present mainly souvenirs: carpet and pileless items, bags, purses. Strictness and the preciseness of geometric design becomes soft due to the fine patterns. The wrong side of silk carpets are perfectly smooth, and the rows of knots – even. The tradition of silk carpet weaving among Turkmen people is comparatively young , but it should be noted, that many patterns which have been woven at the enterprises are well done. Silk pile after being cut, becomes low, so that the design outline looks clear. While making silk items the weavers use quite a new and rich color palette: terracotta, traditional red, beige, pistachio, lemon and complementary colors – blue, green, yellow. A new bright and rich colors have been obtained while dying by Swiss dyestuff of “Ciba” company. The skilled carpet weavers undertook a huge deal of work studying the beautiful piece of art, the carpet-weaving, which occupies a deserved place in history and culture. The carpet weavers are restoring the almost lost antique patterns and disclosing a forgotten secrets of weaving, reviving the traditions of original art.
